Curved Text for Cricut

Curve your lettering here, export it as a large transparent PNG, and upload it to Design Space, which traces it into a cut path. Note up front: this generator does not export SVG yet.

Read this first: this page exports PNG, not SVG

Design Space can cut from a PNG. When you upload a bitmap it asks you to separate the design from its background and then traces the outline into a cut path — and a PNG whose background is genuinely empty makes that step almost automatic, because there is no background left to remove. Direct SVG export is not built into this generator yet, so if your workflow needs a ready-made vector file, this page will not give you one today.

From this page to a cut file

1. Type your text, pick a shape and set the curve. For cutting, a heavier font with solid strokes traces more cleanly than a fine script.
2. Set the text colour to a solid dark colour and leave the Outline width at zero — an outline in a second colour only confuses the trace.
3. Keep Transparent background ticked and export at 3200 × 2000. More pixels means a smoother traced edge.
4. In Design Space, go to Upload, choose Upload Image and select the PNG.
5. Work through the image type and background-removal step. With a transparent PNG there is nothing to erase, so you can move on.
6. Save it as a cut image, then insert it onto your canvas, size it to your material and cut.

The same route works in other cutting software that can trace a bitmap into a path.

Why cutting wants a path and not pixels

A cutting machine follows a line. It needs to know where the blade goes, which is a set of outlines — a vector. A PNG is a grid of pixels with no outlines in it at all, so the software has to work out where the edge of your lettering is before it can cut anything. That trace is guesswork on a small or blurry image, and exact on a large, high-contrast one with an empty background. Exporting curved text for Cricut at the largest size, in one solid colour, on transparency, is simply giving the tracer the easiest possible job.

Practical notes for vinyl

• Very thin script strokes are painful to weed and tear easily. Bebas Neue and Playfair Display cut more reliably than fine script faces.
• Add Letter spacing on a strong curve so neighbouring letters do not touch — touching letters trace as one shape.
• Mirror the design in your cutting software, not here, when you are doing heat-transfer vinyl.
• Cut a small test piece before committing an expensive sheet.
